Brief History of the Palli Shishu Foundation of Bangladesh

Palli Shishu Foundation of Bangladesh (PSF)

In Early Seventies, Prof. Dr. Tofayal Ahmed, a leading pediatrician, dedicated social worker and a thought provoking relentless activist for the children in Bangladesh spun a new concept “Child Care is an integral part of the community development and participation” The constitution of the Palli Shishu Foundation and establishment of Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital about four decades back are the obvious consequence to his above perception.

In this year 1976 Palli Shishu Foundation started mobilizing rural people to set up and run self-reliant clinics across the country. The landmark concept, on which PSF was founded, groomed and evolved to its current state. It imbibes the spirit of understanding to gradually raise consciousness and awareness among rural people about child health. Mother care and educating mothers has also been greatly evaluated for raising social awareness, creating volunteers and eventually developing national movement for child Health care. Over the last decades, PSF activities gained momentum and at the same time the number of clinics increased to 47 from 6 in 1976. Currently its coverage spread across 802 million people about 1700 villages. As years elapsed from its birth, PSF activities expanded to protection of Legal rights of the needy, Women empowerment, Food Security, Tree Plantation, Mass Education, NGO Health Service Delivery program (NHSDP), Advancing Universal Health Coverage (AUHC) Project, Micro finance among others, PSF’s role in economic and social emancipation of people, Particularly the rural mass cannot be overemphasized. Let us not fail to rewind back to our memories with PSF founder Prof. Dr. Tofayel Ahmed and his teammates some of whom are yet activity attached with it.
